at winning that nomination. mitt romney had also run in 2008. remember? he lost to john mccain that year. but that year, 2008, also was not john mccain's first effort at winning the republican presidential nomination. he had run before as well. he had run in the year 2000, when he lost to george w. bush. and while that john mccain campaign and his loss that year has mostly been remembered for the egregiously racist dirty tricks played against john mccain in the south carolina primary that year, that's mostly what we think of when we think of him losing to george w. bush that year, now what is starting to become the more salient thing about that losing run, about that losing attempt at winning the republican presidential nomination, what seems more salient now is who john mccain's national co-chair was for that run. it was republican senator chuck hagel. there he is. you can see him in the little circle on the left there. with john mccain's entourage as john mccain was getting ready to launch his presidential bid back in 2000. this is the same chuck hagel who is president obama's nominee

material. his old pal and fellow vietnam veteran john mccain jumped all over him for opposing the search --the surge in iraq. >> were you correct or not to say that the surge would be the month dangerous foreign policy blunder since vietnam? correct or incorrect? yes or no? are you going to answer the question? the question is, where you're right or wrong? that is a pretty straightforward question. i would like for you to answer whether you were right or wrong, and then you are free to elaborate. >> i am not going to give you a yes or no answer -- >> hagel finally gave the answer on the surge that he wanted to give. >> i saw the consequences and suffering and horror of war, so i did question a surge. will this be worth the sacrifice? we lost almost 1200 american during that period was it required, necessary? >> how much of that exchange was political, how much was personal, and how much was related to the defense policy? >> 92, 11, 13. a lot of it was personal. one could not watch those hearings without feeling there were a lot of personal grudges but, even vendettas, being settled. >> c

texas senator john cornyn, who has decided to make himself the de facto leader of the hagel opposition. >> the nomination of chuck hagel to be the next secretary of defense has already done damage to the united states' credibility in its attempt to deny iran a nuclear weapon. >> hagel is also likely to face questions about his position on gay rights after his 1998 comments, criticizing a u.s. ambassador nominee as openly, aggressively gay. hagel apologized and that former adviser, james hormel, now supports hagel's nomination. but much of the opposition to hagel is rooted in his loud split with the republican party over the iraq war and skepticism about his willingness to use force. in an interview with cnn, vice president biden argued that hagel is no dove. >> the idea of getting engaged in a ground war, in a country that's in transition is not a precipitation any military man would suggest. >> in many ways, obama's pick of hagel, who he forged a relationship with in the senate, then traveled with to afghanistan and iraq in july of 2008, along with cia nominee john brennan and incomin

correspondent, john miller, who is a former deputy commissioner of the new york city police department, to join us from new orleans tonight. john, why is new york city enjoying record-low violence when the violence is so high in chicago, philadelphia, or new orleans? >> reporter: well, you look at new orleans. there's a celebration going on around here. but part of the reality is, this is one of the cities that leads the nation in murder, and the disparity, according to a police executive research forum study that brought all the police chiefs together, was it's what happens to the arrests after they get to court. now, take new york. they have a three- to five-year mandatory minimum. that means that if a gun charge ends up in front of a judge, you're almost certain to go to jail for three years. in chicago, you've got a 50-50 chance that you're not going to do any jail time almost. 33% of those cases are dismissed outright. >> pelley: so if you're caught with a gun in new york, whether you have used it in a crime or not, you're going to jail for three to five years, but not in chicago. >> repor
